The Importance of Time Management
We all have 24 hours in a day, but many people simply do not accomplish what they would like to in that 24 hour period. The majority of adult’s hours are spent at work, which leaves a limited amount to get done everything else that needs to be done-not to mention time to do things simply for enjoyment.
We have to cook, clean, take care of the kids, mow the yard, take the cat to the vet, get our yearly physical, fix the garage door, paint that old shed, and so on. There is always “something” to do and oftentimes we run out of hours and put things off until the next day and the cycle starts all over again.
If your life is like this I want to assure you that there is hope for you. You can learn to manage your time effectively and even carve some quality time for family, friends, and yourself. The first thing that you need to do is sit down and make a list of your priorities and obligations. You may want to write things like work, family time, friends’ time, and leisure time. Then write down what you have been spending your time doing and gauge where your time goes.
Are you spending hours watching television each evening when you could be spending quality time with your family? Are you taking overtime hours at work because you have a hard time saying no, yet wish you had more time for golf? Do you spend too much time on the Internet when you could be getting your “to do” list done around the house? Do you continually text people through your time off and before you know it hours has gone by?
There are plenty of time wasters. It is important to discern if you are actually wasting time on unproductive activities and do something to change this if you are. Make a schedule of how you would like your days to look like and follow through with it as best as you can. Of course you can make changes as necessary, but be sure to create the schedule with time management in mind.
A great idea is to sit down either in the evening or in the morning and make your schedule for the next day. It should only take a few minutes to jot down a “to do” list. Post the list in a spot in which you will see it throughout the day to serve as a reminder. Check off things as you accomplish them. You will find that you will be more productive with your time and feel less stressed and rushed. You family and friends will appreciate more quality time with you and you may even find more time to polish up on that game of golf or tennis.
Time management is important. Successful men and women are known for managing their time effectively. Begin to arrange a time efficient schedule for your life today.
